Courtroom Mama is a Latina, mami to a baby boy, wife to a man, and a law student. The Pal was born while she was in law school, and all three of them are trying to Get Through This. They do pretty well, but the barriers to the legal profession for mothers begin in law school, and she feels them. Like everything else, sometimes it’s great, and sometimes it hurts. The law is a great fit for Mama, the definition of is, and the essence of society; the “system,” however, often chafes and binds. The story of a mother in law school is the story of a woman in society, a perfect microcosm of the oppressions, contradictions, and victories.
CM is a feminist, and doesn’t believe that feminism and motherhood are incompatible. She’s all about social, economic, and reproductive justice. She believes that mamas can be agents for positive change, and hopes to create a better world in her lifetime so that the dark days of her upbringing will be nothing more than a sad memory of the way we were for the Pal and all the other mamas’ pals out there.
[Update: I don't want to take down the above because it captures who I was when the blog started. But now there are TWO boy children, a law degree, a bar exam passed... well, let's just say it feels a little less uphill all the time. Thanks for tuning in!]
